Our Story

For a combined 40+ years my wife and I have been working in the field of biotechnology.  While a fascinating field, our true passion has been growing produce and herbs.  Growing has become one of our favorite hobbies and It seems like we have done it all…..large gardens, small gardens, hydroponic gardens in the house.  We have cloned plant cuttings, built our own Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) and aeroponic systems and raft bubble tables to enjoy fresh produce and share with our family and friends.

In 2008 we attempted to pursue our passion and try to make a living out of it.   We had plans to build a large hydroponic commercial greenhouse to supply our community with year-round lettuce and herbs.  However, due to limitations beyond our control, were we unsuccessful in our first attempt.

Fourteen years and two kids later, we decided to try for our dream again!  Welcome Boxcar Greens!  In November of 2021 we developed a new business plan and invested in a 320sq/ft Freight Farm which utilizes highly efficient vertical growing panels and LED lights customized to provide plants with optimized light spectrums for optimal growth.  Though our Farm has a small footprint, it has a 13,000 plant capacity due to a vertical rather than horizontal growth method.  The entire system exists as a closed environment where light, nutrients, humidity and temperate are tightly controlled within optimal plant growth parameters.  It is monitored 24/7 with a smartphone App.  This allows us to produce the same growing environment and the same premium produce in January as in July.

The Boxcar Greens system is highly efficient and requires far less energy use than traditional greenhouses.   Our tap water is filtered five times through sediment, carbon and reverse osmosis membranes before it nourishes our plants.  Due to the design of our system no water is wasted and no chemical waste is produced, making our farm efficient and environmentally friendly.  On a daily average our farm will use five gallons of water to support up to 13,000 plants.
